2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2019 150th Anniversary of the Estonian Song Festival Estonia’s 2019 commemorative coin celebrates 150 years of the country’s general song festival tradition, a cultural institution closely bound to the formation of national identity. The first national festival took place in Tartu from 18 to 20 June 1869. It was initiated and organized by the Vanemuine singing society under the guidance of publisher Johann Voldemar Jannsen, bringing together 878 male singers and instrumentalists. At a time when Estonia belonged to the Russian Empire, singing collectively in Estonian strengthened cultural self-assertion and solidarity. The tradition later became associated with the Singing Revolution of 1988, confirming the festival’s wider historical resonance. Its coin design captures the event through movement and celebration. Grete-Lisette Gulbis, then only fifteen and from Tõrva, won the design competition with an idea inspired by the festival procession: joyful pride, richly varied folk costumes and lines of singers flowing like waves combine in a vivid tribute to Estonia’s communal singing heritage.
