2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2019 100th Anniversary of the University of Tartu Estonia’s commemorative coin marks a century since the University of Tartu became the country’s first institution of higher education to teach in Estonian. Its roots reach much further back. In 1632, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden founded the Academia Dorpatensis in Dorpat, placing the university among the oldest seats of learning in northern and eastern Europe. Following the creation of the Republic of Estonia, the institution was transformed in 1919 into the University of the Republic of Estonia, with Estonian established as its language of instruction. The university identifies its national beginning with the inaugural assembly held on 1 December 1919, although students had already entered its doors on 6 October. The coin’s central image is the university’s distinguished main building. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “RAHVUSÜLIKOOL 100” and “UNIVERSITAS TARTUENSIS”, together with “1632”, “EESTI” and “2019”. Designed by graphic artist Indrek Ilves, the composition places the centenary within the institution’s much older story.
