His presidency shaped domestic politics as well as European cooperation, especially through his close partnership with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Important momentum for the single market and the later Economic and Monetary Union emerged during his time in office. The coin commemorates a president whose political career is closely connected with the development of both France and Europe in the late twentieth century.
