2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2018 70th Anniversary of the Union of the Dodecanese with Greece Issued in 2018, this Greek €2 commemorative coin marks the seventieth anniversary of the Dodecanese becoming part of Greece. The southeastern Aegean islands had been under Italian rule since 1912; during the Second World War they were first occupied by Germany and later administered by the Allied powers. The 1947 Treaty of Peace with Italy, signed in Paris on 10 February and entering into force on 15 September, transferred Italy’s sovereignty over the Dodecanese to Greece. The formal union was celebrated in Rhodes on 7 March 1948. The coin’s design features a stylised rose, the historic emblem associated with Rhodes, above radiating waves.
