2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2018 420th Anniversary of the birth of Gian Lorenzo Bernini San Marino’s 2018 commemorative issue marks the 420th anniversary of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, born in Naples on 7 December 1598. Bernini was an Italian sculptor, architect and painter whose work had a decisive influence on the development of Roman Baroque art during the seventeenth century. He received commissions from, among others, popes and cardinals, reflecting his prominent position in the cultural and artistic life of Rome. The coin therefore honours both his birth anniversary and his broader importance as a versatile master of the Italian Baroque. Its central design presents a detail from Bernini’s bust of Costanza Bonarelli. The dates “1598–2018” identify the commemorative span, linking the artist’s birth year with the year of issue.
