2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2012 UNESCO World Heritage Sites The Spanish 2-euro commemorative coin of 2012 is the sixth issue in Spain’s series and honors Burgos Cathedral (Santa María de Burgos), dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The inner design depicts the cathedral’s silhouette; above appear “ESPAÑA” and “2012”, while the crowned “M” mintmark sits to the right and the outer ring carries the twelve EU stars. Construction began in 1221 and the building was already in use for worship nine years later, with work continuing in phases until 1567. Predominantly French Gothic in style, the cathedral gained Renaissance elements in the 15th and 16th centuries and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984 as a comprehensive testimony to Gothic art.
