2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2016 150th Anniversary of the Arkadi Monastery Torching Issued in 2016, Greece’s commemorative €2 coin marks the 150th anniversary of the Holocaust at Arkadi Monastery on Crete. During the Cretan uprising against Ottoman rule, several hundred insurgents and civilians sought refuge inside the monastery in November 1866. After a two-day siege, Ottoman forces breached the walls on 8 November. The defenders included Abbot Gabriel Marinakis and the fighter leader Ioannis Dimakopoulos; as the assault overwhelmed the compound, Kostis Giaboudakis detonated the gunpowder store. The deaths of those who refused submission transformed Arkadi into a lasting emblem of resistance and self-sacrifice, while news of the event helped revive European philhellenism and support for the Cretan cause.
