2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2022 Ukraine and Freedom Estonia dedicated this commemorative coin to Ukraine, expressing solidarity with its freedom and its pursuit of independence during the war. Its design was developed in 2022 on an exceptionally tight schedule, with preparatory work beginning in April. The Estonian Academy of Arts invited Ukrainian students continuing their studies in Estonia to take part in a design competition. The winning concept came from Daria Titova, a young refugee from Kharkiv. Her composition is gentle yet resolute: the outline of a girl or woman shelters a bird in her hand, while an ear of wheat adds a distinctly life-giving note. Eesti Pank associated the female figure with tenderness. After the central bank’s supervisory board approved the design in early May, the words “SLAVA UKRAINI” were incorporated as a sign of Ukrainian independence and resistance. The national name “EESTI” and the year “2022” identify the issue, while the twelve stars in the outer ring place this message within the European coin tradition.
