2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2026 100th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Athens Issued by Greece in 2026, this €2 commemorative coin marks the centenary of the Academy of Athens. A constitutional decree dated 18 March 1926 established the institution as a national academy for the sciences, humanities and fine arts. Its creation followed decades of efforts to found a Greek scholarly academy and deliberately invoked the legacy of Plato’s ancient Academy and Athens’ historic role as a centre of learning. The institution soon joined international academic networks and became Greece’s highest academic and research body. Today it supports research, publications, scholarships and prizes, while providing expert advice on scientific, cultural and wider public issues.
