He is widely regarded as Slovenia’s foremost writer and playwright and as a formative figure in Slovene modernism. Cankar spent a highly influential period in Vienna, where writing became his profession and his work acquired a pronounced concern for realism, poverty and social injustice. By giving literary expression to marginalised people and national questions, he helped shape modern Slovene cultural identity. The anniversary therefore commemorates both his birth and his lasting place in Slovenia’s literary history.
