2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro 2009 – 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union. Malta issued this €2 commemorative coin in 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, making it the country’s first €2 commemorative issue. The occasion recalled the start of EMU’s third stage on 1 January 1999, when the participating currencies’ exchange rates were irrevocably fixed, the euro was introduced, and a common monetary policy began. Its central design links a deliberately simple stick figure to the euro symbol, expressing the currency’s role in Europe’s long process of economic integration. Twelve stars around the outer ring identify the European Union.
